Barring another setback, the 3 most likely dates for Pedro Martinez’s return are Saturday May 24, Thursday May 29, and Tuesday June 3.
He threw a successful 73 pitch minor league session on Monday May 19, and will probably replace Claudio Vargas in the rotation as soon as he’s ready. Pedro is scheduled for a bullpen session in front of the Mets coaches in Atlanta this Wednesday (May 21). This coming Saturday probably wouldn’t be considered an option, but because of the Mets doubleheader on Tuesday May 20 without a following off-day, the Mets won’t have a starter with 4 days rest on Saturday.
Pedro was injured on April 1. The original official estimates were “4-6 weeks” but bloggers and reporters immediately interpreted that as “about 6 weeks until he can make rehab starts.” While Pedro is already past the 6 week mark, a return to the Major Leagues in May would exceed most people’s initial expectations.
