OK, Saturday’s game had to be the first midseason game ever where a first place team started 3 thirty-somethings who had missed the entire previous season. Tatis missed 3 of the last 4 seasons, Knight missed the last 5, and Cancel missed the last 7! And the rest of the lineup included a third-string second baseman, the #4 outfielder, and a first baseman who a month ago was clearly washed up. And yet the Mets are in first, because that first baseman is probably going to win Player of the Month, and to compete with Tatis for Comeback Player of the Year. Knight’s going to the Olympics. And Cancel is a local hero because he has 3 huge hits: the 2-run game winning single that might have (but didn’t) save Willie’s job, a tenth-inning double after which he scored the winning run, and an eighth-inning single after which he scored the winning run against the Phillies. OK, those are his only hits this season so he’s hitting 214 with a 471 OPS. So let’s not rely on him too much going forward. But hey — great job, and a score of 1.000 in POHTWBG (percent of hits that won ball games).
Can we bring back Mookie?
