OK, I would have liked Adam Dunn (if he were available at a reasonable price) but all told I’m very happy that the Mets didn’t sell the farm yesterday. And it’s awfully hard not to focus on the fact that if we hadn’t sent Jason Bay, Xavier Nady, and Scott Kazmir away in previous deadline deals we wouldn’t be trying to get them back now.
Sometimes a team knows they have to win right now. The Mets aren’t in that situation. Reyes and Wright are 25 years old. The organization looks fine for the long run. I think for various reasons, including long term fan loyalty and satisfaction, there’s a limit to how much you want to base your team on imported stars. The Mets already have Beltran, Delgado, Johan, Billy, and Pedro. It’s time to let the kids develop. It’s not just about winning and losing. It’s about watching guys like Reyes, Wright, and Pelfrey develop into greatness in front of our eyes. Will Pelfrey continue his growth? Will F-Mart, Niese, Murphy, Flores, Parnell, Kunz, etc. follow? Who knows? But this is part of the joy of loving a baseball team. I’m much happier to be a Mets fan today than I was the day after we traded Peterson and Huber (who didn’t make it) and Kazmir (who did).
